November Meeting -- Saturday, November 10, 2018

Catherine, or Cat, Wilson held members attention as she described her journey to become a Judy Niemeyer certified instructor and talked about how Judy has created patterns and templates to create Judy's quilts.  Cat then shared some of her stunning quilts and variations on some of the many patterns available that use the pieced paper technique developed and refined by Judy Niemeyer.

October Meeting -- Saturday, October 13, 2018

At our October Meeting, members had the pleasure of hearing Leah Zieber, quilt historian, share her immense knowledge of the history of quilts, fabric manufacturing, and dyeing.  The quilts she brought along were amazing especially when you realized that some were from as early as the 1830's! You can see some of them in the photos below.  Leah shared information on how she dated quilts and the dyeing process used in the pass including how toxic the dye could be.   She also share one quilt that was a memorial quilt including a gravestone with the name and date of the deceased on it!  It is truly amazing what past quilters have produced.

Leah not only studies and collects antique quilts, she also creates patterns based on the quilts she owns.  These patterns are her interpretation of the original quilt.  For more information about Leah and her patterns and books go to her website zieberquilts.com.

September 2018 Meeting

QUILTS OF VALOR FOUNDATION

Rose Rhoades, who is involved with the Quilts of Valor Foundation in the Southern California area, shared how she became involved in this wonderful program.  She told us how the program was started with one woman making a quilt for her returning military son and how it has grown into an international organization.  The foundation has been able to give away more than 195,000 quilts since its inception in the early 2000's.  Rose also shared stories of her own local group and the quilts they have made.  More information can be found at the QOVF website:  www.qovf.org

Two of the guild's Friendship Groups, Stitches for Kids and Quilting Bee Show and Share, presented Quilts of Valor to Rose Rhodes to be used in the program.  Rose asked the guild to present a quilt to a veteran in the La Quinta area. The quilt from Quilting Bee Show and Share was used for this presentation!

Quilting Bee Show and Share of Indio presented veteran Jim Burk of La Quinta with a Quilt of Valor.  He was very appreciative.  Thank you, Jim, for your service to our country.

June Meeting 2018

Ten of the Guild's thirteen Friendship Groups came together on Saturday, June 9, 2018 to share what they were doing and to invite others to join them.  There was talking and sharing and talking and refreshments and more talking.  It is always wonderful to meet other quilters!

LONG ARM QUILTING PANEL EVENT

Six local long arm quilters (Nancy Wilhelm, Rebecca Blosser, Connie Corteville, Treese Pflum, Sharon Rooker, and Hester Mastro) shared their expertise with members of the guild on Saturday, May 12.  They talked about how they got into long arm quilting, the machines they use and why, and what to expect when you take a quilt to a long arm quilter to be quilted.  They also shared examples of their work.  It was a wonderful presentation.
