PROGRAMS 2023

The Coachella Valley Quilt Guild presents excellent speakers, including nationally known teachers and lecturers, that provide insight to a wide variety of topics related to quilting, from traditional to modern, from piecing techniques to design embellishments. The lecture presentations are given immediately after our monthly Saturday membership meetings, and classes are usually held on the Sunday following the meeting at the same facility or on Zoom.  Classes can fill up fast, so if you see one that interests you click the PayPal button to sign up or contact the Programs VP, Cheryl Quesnell or Nancy Wilhelm at programscvqg@gmail.com

Meetings of the Coachella Valley Quilt Guild will be hybrid meetings -- in person at University of Riverside, Palm Desert Campus and on Zoom -- January through May and September through November.  June, July and August will be Zoom only.  December is our Holiday Luncheon.

Classes will either be in person or Zoom but not hybrid.  Check below for more information.

Zoom Sit and Sew

Quick Placemat Method

10am to noonish

Join us for the Zoom Sew Along on Sunday January 15, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noonish.  In addition to working on whatever project you choose, you can also learn a cool, easy and quick method for finishing placemats without having to bind them, or hand sew that closing along the edge that never ends up being perfect.
To do a placemat along with Judi Moran, come with a completed top, 12-1/2 x 18-1/2 to finish at 12x18 or smaller if desired.  The top can be pieced or one piece of fabric if you want to make it super easy peasy.  Cut the batting the same size, again to finish 12x18 or size of your top.  BUT, cut your backing 1" wider, so 12-1/2" by 19-1/2.  Judi will show you how to finish the placemat on the Sew Along.

Eleanor Burns is Coming!!

Saturday, February 11, 2023

 Meeting starts at 10:00 am

Program is 10:30am -- 12:00

Over forty years ago, Eleanor Burns introduced her first Quilt in a Day book, beginning a quilt making revolution. She invited all types of sewers to participate in an age-old tradition using her unique style; a diverse combination of cutting and sewing applications which replaced scissors and templates with rips and strips, bringing rotary speed to patchwork. She also introduced an incredibly rapid stitching system, applying the method of assembly line sewing to piecework. Her concise, step-by-step directions were easy to grasp, allowing anyone to be successful at making a quilt. Eleanor Burns gave quilt makers techniques that compacted months into merely a day—a quilt in a day.

Today, as she continues to passionately devote herself to nurturing and motivating thousands of want-to-be quilters with needed self confidence, her name and techniques have become synonymous with quilt making.

Quilting with Liberty Fabric

Zoom presentation

Jenni Smith is a UK-based pattern designer and author of the book Quilting with Liberty Fabric.  She is the first person ever to have produced a quilting book in collaboration with Liberty London – the iconic British Brand renowned for their beautiful fabrics including Tana Lawn. In her unique lecture, Jenni will be describing how this fascinating book was made.

Liberty as company is 145 years old and Jenni is an Art Historian by trade so each quilt in the book represents a decade in the history of one of the world’s most famous fabric manufacturers.  The lecture is a visual feast from Victorian England to the current day, celebrating art and craftsmanship via Arthur Liberty, William Morris and pioneering members of the Liberty Design Studio.

How did the son of a draper build such an incredible empire which draws people back year after year? Hear the fascinating story of the store’s construction and how this sparked some of the practical quilt patterns featured in the book.

Claire Victor

My Tumbling Block Journey

Zoom presentation

Meeting starts at 10:00am

Program starts at 11:00am

Former Coachella Valley Guild member Claire Victor has been juried into national and international shows and exhibits regularly. She has won numerous awards including Best Modern Quilt at Road to California in 2014, Best Modern Quilt at World Quilt Competition in 2019, and recently Best Sewing Machine Quilting at  Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) in 2022.

Almost from the beginning she was mesmerized by 3-D quilting designs, returning time and again to the “tumbling block” pattern. In this trunk show she will share how this humble three-piece block has endless possibilities, and how it has evolved into her current modern abstract quilts.

You can some of Claire’s work on Instagram @cvquilts.
