The Quilts and Quiltmakers
of Caohagan Island
Hybrid Meeting -- Speaker on Zoom
Meeting starts at 10:00am
Program starts at 11:00am
You’ll be transported to a tiny island — just 13 acres — in the central Philippines as you enjoy images and stories of the colorful quilts and the more than 100 quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. You’ll see photos of more than 50 of these handmade, one-of-a-kind quilts plus be introduced to the unique techniques developed by these quiltmakers whose tools are simply fabric and scissors, needle and thread. I spent more than a month on the island, quilted with the residents, went fabric shopping with them on nearby Cebu Island, and snorkeled the reef that surrounds Caohagan. Those who view the quilts come away smiling, inspired by the creativity of these women and men.

Plant Impressions, Leaf Prints on Paper and Fabric
In person class -- UCR palm Desert
9am to 4pm
Plant Impressions are prints of leaves on fabric or paper. The leaves are layered with the paper and fabric, bound and boiled. The images left behind are created by the tannins and dyes in the leaves. It is a fun process that produces unexpected prints that can be used in a variety of ways.
In this workshop we will make a batch of Leaf Prints. The process will be explained and the students will lay out leaves on pieces of fabric and paper. During the lunch break the batches will be boiled. After lunch we will unveil our treasures. The students will experience the entire process. Each student will take home a small batch of their own prints.

Wendy Mathson's presentation focuses on how you can get a fresh look with traditional blocks that are over a century old. Straight line piecing in these blocks gives the illusion of curves and a vibrant feeling of movement in a quilt.
Wendy is the author of "A New Light on Storm at Sea Quilts" and the inventor of Quilters' TRIMplates.

TRIMplate Piecing: Storm At Sea and Snail Trail Blocks
In person class -- UCR palm Desert
9am to 4pm
My TRIMplate® rulers are tools that allow you to trim after you sew for greater accuracy. All fabric pieces start as squares or rectangles, so they are easily and quickly cut from strips. This method uses no templates, no foundation or paper piecing, and there is no bias on the outer edge of the finished blocks. Learn to use the TRIMplates as you make one of the class projects. (Confident beginner to advanced)
Wendy will provide TRIMplates for students to use in class. (Optional purchase after class.)

Keep It Simple But Pack a Punch
Zoom Class
Times TBA
Two 3-hour workshops working on designing works to showcase simple but effective quilts. We will discuss color, values and design concepts, then sketch out a rough design on paper, keeping in mind that “simple” often makes more of a powerful statement than “busy”. This class will involve mostly improv quilting without a ruler. Alternatively, a very simple fused quilt will also be taught. Bring your hand dyed or commercial fabrics: various values in other hand dyes, batiks, silks or prints. Gradient fabrics are always fun. We will cut and piece or fuse our quilts. Quilting and facing will be demonstrated and discussed.
