PROGRAMS 2024

The Coachella Valley Quilt Guild presents excellent speakers, including nationally known teachers and lecturers, that provide insight to a wide variety of topics related to quilting, from traditional to modern, from piecing techniques to design embellishments. The lecture presentations are given immediately after our monthly Saturday membership meetings, and classes are usually held on the Sunday following the meeting at the same facility or on Zoom.  Classes can fill up fast, so if you see one that interests you click the PayPal button to sign up or contact the Programs VP, Cheryl Quesnell, Annie Houston or Nancy Wilhelm at programscvqg@gmail.com

Meetings of the Coachella Valley Quilt Guild will be hybrid meetings -- in person at University of Riverside, Palm Desert Campus and on Zoom -- January through May and September through November.  June, July and August will be Zoom only.  December is our Holiday Luncheon.

Classes will either be in person or Zoom but not hybrid.  Check below for more information.

The Big, The Bold, The Beautiful -- Working with African Prints

Hybrid Meeting

Meeting starts at 10:00am

Program starts at 11:00am

We love them and are drawn to them when we see them, but sometimes those big, bright, bold prints can seem daunting or even intimidating to use. But, my dear quilters, you no longer have to be scared to use them and cut into them.  In this program I share inspiration & ideas for incorporating those vivacious African wax prints into your quilt projects. Using samples from modern, applique and traditional patterns, I point out ways the fabric was used and show how they can really make any quilt shout with joy!  I give a brief description of the different types of African fabrics and depending on the kind of bed, wall or art quilt you are creating, I share recommendations on what types might work best.  This lecture will free you up to try something new and give you permission to break all the quilting color-rules!

African Wonky Log Cabin

1 pm to 5pm

Note:  This class follows the Saturday Guild Meeting.

This workshop is a great introduction for using African wax print fabrics in quilts.  Using an improv piecing method, students learn how to make a crazy-pieced center block and then build larger strips around to make wonky log cabin blocks.  The blocks can be turned into a wall hanging, table runner, throw or full sized quilt. Optional

Kits are available from the instructor or you can use fabrics from your own stash.
